We call any ring used to propose to a girl an engagement ring. Doesn’t that just mean an engagement ring? No. An engagement ring is a ring of a specific design, but as there are many different ways to propose – using various types of rings – it is not the only type of ring that can be used as an engagement ring. A proposal can be made with an engagement ring, a wedding ring, or sometimes with both an engagement ring and a wedding ring at the same time. We refer to all of these as engagement rings.
Once the groom had plucked up the courage to take this big step, he carefully chose the engagement ring; if he was traditional, he even asked the girl’s father for her hand. Finally, the big moment arrived for him to ask the love of his life to marry him. The couple commit themselves to one another, and their intention to marry is symbolised by the wearing of the engagement ring.

How has the custom of wearing wedding rings evolved in Hungary throughout history?
The origins of the custom of wearing wedding rings – which is still familiar today and remains more or less in practice – date back as far as the early 19th century.
In the 17th century, it was still customary to give engagement gifts such as an engagement shawl. In the 19th century, these were gradually replaced by engagement rings. By the 20th century, girls were already being given gift rings served as tokens of love. The rings given as gifts were typically made of silver.

The suitor who was actually serious about the relationship would give her a with a gold ring He had to emphasise this. The girls were now only wearing one of them.
They had yet another ring made for the wedding. The wedding ring It appeared only during the wedding ceremony, and this symbolised complete unity and married life.

In practice, this worked as follows: the groom would buy a ring for his fiancée, and she would give him a scarf in return; later, they would each buy a ring for the other.
There have even been cases where the groom didn’t have a ring, but the bride received two – one engagement ring and a a retaining ring.
Wearing wedding rings, from ancient times right up to the present day. What shaped the customs? Why is it customary to wear rings on the fourth finger?

The wedding ring should be worn on the left hand. But why, and how did this custom come about? There are several theories as to its origins.
Right up until the 20th century, it was believed that a vein ran from the fourth finger of the left hand all the way up to the heart. Because of this belief, great significance was attached to the fourth finger, which is now known as the ring finger. It was believed that only this finger was suitable for wearing jewellery symbolising love.
According to another belief dating from the Renaissance, the fourth finger symbolises the Sun; it was associated with cheerfulness and positivity, and it was thought that this finger might be suitable for wearing a wedding ring.
Wearing a wedding ring still plays a major role in couples’ lives today. It is true, however, that its role and the way it is worn have changed considerably. We no longer believe in fairy tales, nor do we attach any significance to astrology.
You can’t just cling rigidly to traditions from long ago; it’s a different world now. Nowadays, nobody expects anyone to wear their wedding ring according to strict rules, clinging to the customs that were in force in our grandmothers’ day.
Jewellers usually recommend that couples wear their rings in whatever way is comfortable for them and suits their taste.
Regardless of this, it is worth being aware of how the custom of wearing a wedding ring has evolved and developed over the centuries. It is also worth bearing in mind that if you are aware of the traditional ways in which a wedding ring should be worn, it will be easier for you to decide whether you like this style, or whether you would prefer to wear this symbol of love – the wedding ring – in a different way.
