Our wedding is one of the most beautiful and special days of our lives, so it’s understandable that everyone wants the very best and most beautiful of everything. The same goes for the wedding cake.
Although many people might not realise it, choosing the ideal wedding cake can be just as difficult a task as finding the right dress, decorations or music. There are countless types of wedding cakes to choose from, which can come in almost any flavour, colour or style, so it’s no wonder that this causes a huge headache for many of us. And, of course, it also matters where we get the wedding cake from and at what price!
Wedding cake prices
The price of wedding cakes is essentially determined by the number of slices. It is therefore worth starting by considering how many guests will be attending the wedding, and thus how many slices of cake you will need.
Prices can vary considerably between different regions within the country. In Budapest, for example, the same cake can be bought at a completely different price to that in other major Hungarian cities. Out in the countryside, the situation is once again completely different.
In addition, the following factors also influence prices:
- wedding cake flavour (the various ingredients are available at different prices)
-wedding cake decoration (how elaborately decorated the cake is, how detailed the decoration is)
- where we order from (a well-known patisserie charges much more, but the result is usually outstanding)
- Are there any dietary restrictions that need to be taken into account? (The ingredients used in cakes suitable for people with dietary restrictions are more expensive than those used in cakes made with standard ingredients.)
- Do we require delivery, and if so, how far?
Wedding cake prices in Budapest
It is fair to say that, within our country, wedding cakes (and almost everything else) are most expensive in Budapest. Within the capital, however, prices vary even further.
In the city centre – that is, in Districts V, VI and VII, as well as in the more upmarket districts of Buda, particularly District XII – everything is more expensive; cakes are no exception.
In the outlying or less fashionable districts, we can order our wedding cake at much more affordable prices. It’s also worth noting that the places worth ordering from – because they produce high-quality cakes – are quite scattered across the city. It is therefore worth setting out, even in the early stages of wedding planning, to take a little tour of the city and find the places that appeal to us most and are within our budget.
It is also important to start thinking about the wedding cake right at the beginning of the wedding planning process, because – just as with other services – a patisserie’s diary can fill up; and even if it hasn’t, if we place our order too late, they often charge a hefty surcharge for orders that need to be prepared at short notice.
Many people who live in the capital and are holding their weddings here decide not to order their wedding cake locally, but to opt for an alternative solution and order from smaller towns near Budapest instead. One example is Szentendre, which is nearby and where you can get cheaper, high-quality products. The question of delivery often springs to mind at this point, and not without reason, as many places charge an extra fee for this. Generally speaking, many retailers offer free delivery within a certain radius, and some even deliver free of charge up to 50–60 km away.
Prices of wedding cakes and accessories
A slice of wedding cake costs between 500 and 2,500 Ft, but of course special requests and lots of decorative elements can drive the price per slice up almost indefinitely. The cost increases further if the cake is made by a master confectioner. At a renowned patisserie, you’re almost certain to be able to order superb cakes, but as mentioned earlier, there are plenty of high-quality patisseries in Hungary just waiting to be discovered. Before making your final decision, it’s advisable to visit lots of places and sample plenty of slices!
Wedding cake prices
Based on the slice prices mentioned earlier, here are some price estimates for whole cakes:
- The price of a 40-slice wedding cake ranges from 20,000 to 100,000 Ft
- A 60-slice wedding cake costs between 30,000 and 150,000 Ft
- A wedding cake serving 80 people costs between 40,000 and 200,000 Ft
- The price of a wedding cake serving 100 people ranges from 50,000 to 250,000 Ft
- A wedding cake serving 120 people costs between 60,000 and 300,000 Ft
Prices of accessories
There are loads of cake decorations, most of which are unknown to the average person who isn’t a pastry chef and has no connection to the profession.
When we request a quote for a wedding cake, in theory every supplier should ask about these extras as well (whether we want them, how many we want, etc.), but many do not do so. We’ve now compiled a list of the most important wedding cake decorations and extras that are worth bearing in mind, so you don’t end up panicking at the last minute because of shortages or duplicates:
Flowers – 200–1,200 Ft each
Cake stand – The deposit ranges from 5,000 to 10,000 Ft

Delivery charge – As we’ve mentioned before, in many cases delivery is free, or cakes are delivered free of charge within a fairly large radius – say, within a 50–60 km radius. Once this distance is exceeded, you should expect to pay an average of 100–400 Ft per kilometre.
Fireworks for the cake – ranging from 500 to 3,000 Ft
Many people consider cake decorations to be unnecessary, but if you think about it, one or two decorations really do play an important role. Ordering flowers and fireworks is, of course, entirely a matter of personal taste, budget and choice, but, for example, a cake stand of the right size and a cake base are not the sort of accessories you should skimp on. We’ll be much worse off if we don’t get hold of these items and end up fumbling about with our own cake base or stand, only for the cake to come to harm in the end because of the wrong dimensions.
Wedding cakes – prices in the countryside
Overall, it can be said that wedding cakes are cheaper in the countryside. That said, however, one should not generalise, as there is still a wide variation between different suppliers and their prices.
Cake prices in the countryside are greatly influenced by the distance of the town in question from the capital, as well as by how popular that town is with couples and how many choose to hold their weddings there!
Cake trends, wedding cake flavours and designs
This year’s cakes were characterised by their unique shapes, interesting technical execution and colour schemes. The „naked cake” was very popular. Imagine a cake with no icing whatsoever, just its own cream – and in many cases, not even that. One of the great advantages of the naked cake is that, as the base is simple, you can be bold with the decoration; fruit and flowers, for example, go wonderfully well with these cakes.
In the 2020 season, the distinctive styles are expected to remain, but we may have to say goodbye to naked cakes and lots of colourful decorations. Decorations based on geometric shapes are likely to be the most popular. This is an interesting trend, as these different shapes can be used to create truly exciting cake designs, and the interplay of shapes allows cakes to be personalised even further.
