Wedding floral decorations can be absolutely beautiful and really liven up a wedding – provided, of course, that they are put together tastefully. That is why it is important not to try to save too much on this aspect.
When it comes to the decorations and the bridal bouquet, practically any idea can be brought to life. The flowers can be arranged in a wide range of colours and in various styles, just as we like. In skilled hands, this can result in beautiful decorations and bouquets.
The design of the floral decorations depends on the flowers that are available at the time, the season in question, and, of course, your individual preferences. It is important to choose decorations and a bridal bouquet that suit your own taste. Naturally, everyone already has an idea of the sort of atmosphere they’d like for their wedding, and the decorations need to be tailored to this. Traditional weddings, for example, call for a completely different style of decoration to, say, a vintage ceremony.
As we have emphasised on several occasions in our previous articles, choosing the wedding date must be the very first step in the planning process. This also affects the floral decorations, as the flowers used for a winter wedding are fundamentally different from those for a spring wedding. Of course, it is possible to use spring flowers at a winter wedding, but you must inform the supplier you wish to entrust with the decorations well in advance.
If you’d like flowers that aren’t in season, you’ll need to ask the supplier directly for help. Below, we’ll take a brief look at the flowers typical of each season and the decorative possibilities they offer.
Winter wedding floral decorations
Evergreens – a single well-placed pine or thuja branch can always look very beautiful
Holly – the holly’s red berries and characteristically shaped leaves look really lovely
Poinsettia – with its beautiful red leaves, the poinsettia can look absolutely lovely as part of a decoration
Spring wedding floral decorations
At this time of year, there are plenty of flowers to choose from. To name but a few, the following bloom in spring: daffodils, tree lilies, long-spiked goldenrod, star-flowered tree lilies, gerberas, large-flowered primrose, velvety cuckoo flower, daisy and spring crocus
Summer wedding floral decorations
Just like last season, there are plenty of beautiful flowers to choose from this summer. A few flowers that look wonderful in a bouquet or as part of a wedding floral arrangement: poppies, dahlias, garden hydrangeas, cannas, scarlet hibiscus, scarlet ginger, marsh irises, red hemp-agrimony, croton, dragon’s-blood, cushion shrub, etc.
Autumn wedding floral decorations
In autumn, there are fewer flowers to choose from, but we can still put together some beautiful colour combinations. At this time of year, berries play a significant role; a plant with red berries, for instance, fits in very nicely with a decoration based on „rusty” autumnal colours. The marvellous colours of autumn look wonderful in a decoration. We might consider using rowan berries, crowberry, bittercress, lilies, anemones, delphiniums, etc. in our arrangements.
Favourite flowers
I’m sure many people have a favourite flower which they’d like to see dominate the floral decorations at their own wedding, or even be the only one used. So you don’t necessarily have to create decorations that match the season; you can base them on a single type of flower. Of course, we’d like to reiterate here that if your favourite flower isn’t in season at the time of your wedding, you should let the decorator, florist, etc., who will be handling this, know your requirements well in advance.
Let’s take a look at what kinds of wedding floral decorations can be created using different types of flowers.
Tulip
A beautiful spring flower and a favourite with many people. This flower comes in a wide range of colours, so it can be used to create all sorts of lovely bouquets and decorative arrangements.
Rose
They are also beautiful and come in a wide range of colours. Roses can be used to create dazzlingly beautiful bouquets and decorations. Incidentally, roses and tulips can also be combined; they look lovely together.
Lily
It’s really popular in the wedding floral palette. It’s no surprise, as it’s absolutely lovely!
Organ
It’s a unique colour, yet it goes well with other colours, though it looks great on its own too. It smells wonderful as well.
Hydrangea
Hydrangeas have huge „heads”; they can be used to create truly beautiful bouquets and other decorative arrangements .
What exactly does wedding floral decoration involve, where should it be placed, and roughly how much does each decorative element cost?
Decorating the venue for the wedding ceremony
Whether it’s a civil or church wedding, decorating the venue is always very important. In a church, floral decorations are usually placed along the edges of the pews, on the door, or perhaps around the altar.
Price: 30,000–50,000 Ft
When it comes to civil weddings, the first question is whether to decorate an outdoor or indoor venue. At a civil wedding, chairs or benches, tables and other items present at the venue, depending on the location, are usually decorated. A ‘gate of happiness’ might also be an option – it’s up to you.
Price: 30,000–60,000 Ft
Decorating the wedding venue
In the case of a civil wedding ceremony, the reception may well take place at the same venue, although this is not really the norm; with church weddings, however, it is standard practice to organise the reception elsewhere.
At the wedding venue, it is the tables and chairs that need decorating most of all, although alongside these, practically any decoration you can imagine is possible, wherever you choose to place it.
Decorations for the chairs
When it comes to chairs, the first thing to consider is whether you’d like chair covers and chair sashes. They aren’t strictly necessary, but if you have them, they create a cohesive, attractive look for the venue. Chairs can also be decorated with flowers; a pretty, understated floral arrangement on the armrests always looks good.
It’s worth hiring the bows and sashes. The hire charge for a bow is around 150–250 Ft, whilst a chair cover costs roughly 350–450 Ft, so you should allow 500–700 Ft per chair.
Table decorations
The price of table decorations is a bit steeper, although there are obviously far fewer tables than chairs. When making table decorations, it’s also important to bear in mind that the couple’s table always receives slightly more elaborate decoration than the other tables. The decoration for the couple’s table costs around 10,000 Ft, whilst that for the other tables ranges from 4,000 to 5,000 Ft .
Making a bridal bouquet
The bridal bouquet is also an important part of the wedding floral décor. Its colour should complement the bride’s dress and the other floral decorations. The most popular flowers for a bridal bouquet are roses, hydrangeas, calla lilies and tulips. Of course, the main thing is that it should complement the dress, the other decorations and the bride’s personal taste.
A professional can create almost anything from a bouquet – the sky’s the limit. Any shape, any colour – all the bride’s special requests can be fulfilled if you turn to an experienced professional.
The price of a bridal bouquet ranges from 15,000 to 40,000 Ft, depending on exactly what you want.
Bridesmaids’ bouquets
These bouquets are a little smaller than the bride’s. We don’t see bouquets like this at every wedding; in many cases, the bridesmaids simply wear a wrist corsage or some other decorative accessory instead. If you do decide to go for bouquets, however, you should expect to pay around 4,000–5,000 Ft per bouquet.
Bouquet to throw
The bride, in addition to the bouquet she carries as she enters the ceremony venue, often prepares another bouquet as well – this is the throwing bouquet. It is essentially the same as the other bouquet, just a little smaller. In keeping with tradition, after the wedding ceremony, the bride, standing with her back to the unmarried girls, throws this bouquet into their midst. It is believed that if a girl catches it, she will be the next to get married!
The price of a bouquet ranges from 4,000 to 5,000 Ft.
Flower wall, flower curtain
A beautiful, flower-filled area like this can really liven up a wedding. It also makes a great backdrop for wedding photos – you can take some truly lovely pictures in front of a wall or curtain like this.
A wall made from fresh flowers comes at quite a hefty price, ranging from 90,000 to 120,000 Ft, but one thing is certain: if we’re willing to spend that amount, we can certainly expect a truly beautiful end result!
The cost of wedding floral decorations
The final cost can be influenced by a number of factors, such as the type of flowers used, where they had to be sourced from, and the quantities involved (how many chairs and tables had to be provided, how many bridesmaids there are, and so on).
The cost of creating a complete floral arrangement generally ranges from 180,000 to 500,000 Ft, so it’s fair to say that the range is quite wide. In addition to the factors mentioned earlier, the size of the decoration team and, of course, varying labour costs also play a significant role.

The Eternal Bouquet
A preserved bouquet is a bouquet made from jewellery, foam flowers, paper or some other durable material, which, by virtue of its materials, does not wilt; thus, the bride can keep it and, even many years later, still admire it, easily recalling that special day.
The bouquet costs between 15,000 and 20,000 Ft, but when you consider that you’re getting a lasting keepsake in return, that amount doesn’t seem all that much after all!
